“At its core, my art is about happiness, enrichment, and re-enchantment – aninvitation to reconnect with the calmness that nature offers.”
Featuring over 80 artworks that span the differing times and motions of the artist’s oeuvre, Zhuang Hong-Yi’s first exhibition at the Powerlong Museum in Shanghai invites the visitor to step into a space where the supposed boundary between the interiority of human experiences and the exterior world of nature’s affectations blur in an interplay of textures and hues. Born in Sichuan in 1962 and moving across continents to Europe in 1992, Zhuang has always carried with him a fascination for – and an essential openness towards – the amalgamations of the ever-changing landscapes that surround him.

Known for his intricate use of paper flowers in his tactile landscapes and flowerbeds, Zhuang pays tribute to the delicate beauty of a Chinese tradition while renegotiating their symbolism to create something new. A homage to his past and a wish for our shared future, the paper petals hold within them the possibilities of impermanence and change, as well as the hopeful resilience of nature. To him, art is about striking a balance between control and chaos, where creativity roots itself at the interstices. The impulsive yet refined details and movements of Zhuang’s works are an attempt at capturing and enunciating an emotive world that transcends language and cultural boundaries, approaching something more immediate within all of us through the gestural and experiential strength of the rhythmic compositions that make up this exhibition.
“We might not all speak the same language, but we can all read flowers.”
The notion of the kaleidoscopic for Zhuang hints at the immediacy of looking, at the constant shifting of perspectives and the meditative qualities of truly allowing yourself to be engulfed by a landscape in flux. To look at the kaleidoscopic is to affect and be affected by the transformative possibilities of color, motion, and form. Exploring art as rejuvenation, art as rest, Zhuang’s response to the sense-uncertainties of contemporary life – to the radically changing conceptions of the time we have and the spaces we are part of – is to engage the viewer in a conversation:

“It is the cycle of nature that forms the ever-present inspiration that I seek to convey in KALEIDOSCOPE - 万花筒— the sense of movement and fluidity that breathes life into each piece. Over the past decades, I have been honored to share my work with audiences around the globe; from the Found Museum in Beijing to the Groninger Museum in the Netherlands, the Erarta Museum in Russia, the Ulm Museum in Germany, and now, the Powerlong Museum in Shanghai. This exhibition holds particular significance for me as one of the most important exhibitions of my career. It represents a homecoming, a chance to share my artistic evolution with the community that first inspired my journey and to create a bridge between my heritage and the cross-cultural influences and discourses that have shaped me. My wish is to bring my art as a celebration of nature’s timeless rhythms; and through this exhibition, I hope to offer a moment of contemplation and joy, inviting each viewer to find their own connection to the delicacy of the natural world and the beauty of the singular flower within its ecology. ”
