  Comments of Foreign Photographers

“I have been to Shanghai.”When I am back to home, people like to know everything about the city. They want to take in all your experiences and encounters with this modern city.

Shanghai today is rapidly changing, its never-ending change and evolution are in the urban, the countryside, their effects spreading across borders, around the world.

The city hosts a lot of people,23 million to be more exactly. It is every one of them that make the city a most brilliant eastern metropolis in the world.

I am not a studio photographer. I am a street photographer and love to capture the moment and pace on the vast boulevards of true world and real beauty. People will always be the priorities in my films and photographs. I am obsessed with the idea of bringing out the best and truest of people;have them interact with my camera, talk to the world through my camera lens and communicate.

It is because of that, that I came to this land on the west coast of the Pacific. While I am telling stories—whether it is about events or anecdotes around the world,it is always the people that are my focus—and the people of Shanghai are among my favorites!

So I hope you enjoy my way of portraying Shanghai through the eyes of a Swede—because I’m in love with you Shanghai.

  Janolof Fritze Sweden

Though I am already back in Marseille, the seven days in Shanghai left me an exceptional experience and it rises in my mind constantly. I became attached, hung up to details. All those little things and the spell of an instant that catches the eyes of each traveler, amaze, touch,or strike a chord for you.

The pictures that catch your eyes are moving. In the spell of an instant, they tell a story, they offer something profound and intimate: the story of women and men living in that city of unceasing movement, ebb and flow.

The endless change brings forward Shanghai, the city of permanent contrasts: the huge, the tiny, the new,the old,the past, the present and the future……These contrasts are so strong, but all interlocked into an indivisible unit. It is just like in any big city of the world, but there everything goes much faster.

  Elisabeth Montagnier France

After 20 years,it seems so fresh that I feel like seeing it for the first time when revisiting Shanghai.

In the recent 15-20 years, this metropolis of 23 million people has changed so profoundly. I am eager to know how these changes have happened and to record and explore Shanghai people’s life and feelings in this transforming city.

In a short week,I have chosen several different perspectives to take pictures of the city. Not only am I impressed by its modernity,I marveled at its prosperity and beauty.

Certainly, compared with 20 years ago,the differences lie not only in the soaring high-rises and varieties of eye-catching luxuries, but also in people’s earnest pursuit of a green and healthy life and a higher and multi-faceted cultural life. Shanghai Museum with tight security measures is open to visitors free of charge. Exhibits there can be taken pictures of and visitors come in continuous streams. All these surprised me.

I hope my pictures will add to the friendship between Nagasaki and Shanghai,Japan and China.

When I was a kid,I was told that if I was to dig a really deep hole I would end up in China .There would be an amazing new world. That seemed magical for a Brazilian child learning his very first notions of geography. This September,2011,after just travelling around half of the world,I arrived in Shanghai,China,a city I had dreamed of for many years.

In the following seven days,I was deeply impressed by the vitality and speed of the city.I can feel that Shanghai, and maybe the whole country,is a new kind of living structure in a very high speed. Enjoying my life in Shanghai,I seem to discover its history with my heart and it seems like a tactile exploration of time.

From the pictures, you will certainly find that people in the city are the propellers of this movement, transforming the present and creating the future.

The opportunity of facing such unique oriental culture,in this very peculiar moment, with such wise, tolerant and kind people, was a very intense experience for me.

When I was invited to Shanghai to photograph,I decided without any hesitation to arrive two weeks early.Contemporary art in China has captivated the imagination of the west for many years, and I decided to photograph SH Contemporary-China's most important contemporary art fair.

I’ll never forget the three weeks I spent exploring Shanghai on my own and with the help of artists and allergists I met at SH Contemporary. I visited the new Taopu Art Center and met legendary Chinese artists like neon artist Shen Fan and the ceramic artist Liu Jianhua.Besides,I also photographed many pieces of fine art at Shanghai’s famous M50 art center.

During these days in Shanghai, the other international photographers and I were treated warmly and carefully, and given a surprisingly impressive schedule that took us to many parts of Shanghai a casual tourist wouldn’t visit and gave us a deeper observation, understanding and appreciation of Shanghai.

I believe,Shanghai as one of the world’s most important big cities will play a big role in bridging the east and the west,China and the World through culture and commerce.

  Michael Rauner U.S.

One of the things we see immediately in Shanghai,is its wonderful and electrifying modernity.

Compared to the old European cities,Shanghai is a lively and enthusiastic little girl, full of energy and strength, like these children in my pictures.

Of course you also realize that there are still areas that feels like 50 years ago. People who live in some communities are still a bit humble, and just below some of the most progressive and modern skyscrapers in the world.

This is definitely the most obvious contrasts I encountered wandering around the city.I believe people who live there also do contributions to the development of the city.

This is a real, comprehensive and continuously developing Shanghai. We feel the charm and energy of a city like Shanghai because it is authentic and real.

  Claudio Bonoldi Italy

During my first visit to Shanghai seven years ago,I stood near the bottom of the beautiful Jinmao Tower and took a picture of it through some weeds.

Now,riding by myself in a big coach from the airport into town,a new Pudong whizzes past me,and instead of weeds,I see another impressive landmark, the World Financial Center and another thousand new buildings reaching beyond the horizon.

And speed is the word that keeps popping up in my head in neon letters throughout this amazing week.

I'm experiencing the quickest 24 hours of my life, the city’s few decades of development in 10 minutes, standing above a huge model of the city inside the “Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center”.

I'm thinking of speed, feeling like a tiny blood cell being pumped through the city’s main artery.

Far away from the Huangpu river on which hundreds of motor barges are chugging up there are the busy streets with cars, bicycles, tricycles and thousands of people constantly passing on.Somtimes things slow down with fathers fishing with their sons, couples strolling under the plane trees, and customers enjoying a quiet cup of tea-short breaks in a city that is all about movement.

This is the charm and kinetic energy of the sparkling metropolis !
