Damien Hirst's diamond-encrusted skull, "For the Love of God" (2007)
When it comes to stakeholders, Damien Hirst’s diamond-encrusted skull isn’t talking, but the media are.
The Washington Post has revealed that Viktor Pinchuk, the Ukrainian billionaire art collector who is hosting a large display of Hirst’s work at his Kiev gallery, is a part owner of the piece, titled For the Love of God. The majority stake is jointly owned by Hirst; his business manager, Frank Dunphy; and Jay Jopling, owner of the prominent London gallery White Cube. Last year Hirst told the Le Monde that if the skull did not sell privately, it would be offered at auction. For the Love of God was first unveiled at White Cube in 2007 with an asking price of £50 million (about $81 million these days), and an offer believed to be around £35 million was rejected. The skull was shown at Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum last fall, but a proposed global tour with stops at Russia's Hermitage, the British Museum, and venues in the Far East has been canceled.
